Val d’Isere boasts some impressive ski touring options.
Although Val d’Isere is well known as one of the best lift accessed off-piste ski resorts in the World, the lesser known ski touring options are equally impressive.
With more and more people exploring off-piste and bigger skis making the off-piste more accessible, ski touring has become the growth area in the Snowsports industry.
Escape from the crowded pistes and the easy access off-piste areas, earn your turns, explore the backcountry, the appeal of ski touring is understandably growing. For people who aren’t afraid to hike to find themselves some fresh untracked snow, Val d’Isere is the ideal destination to learn how to ski tour, or to explore beyond the main resort boundaries.
“Ski Randonnée” is French for ski touring and it requires some specialist equipment. Firstly, you’ll need ski touring bindings that lift at the heel when hiking uphill, but lock down when you are ready to ski. You will also need skins that are fitted to the base of your skis when climbing. Skins prevent the skis from sliding backwards but allow the skis to slide forwards.
Specialist ski touring boots are also popular, being lighter and easier to walk in, however they don’t give as much downhill performance and regular ski boots can be used if you are only going on a small tour.
If you’d like to hire ski touring equipment, then our partner shop Snowberry offers TDCSki clients a significant discount discount on the public rate.
